Whether you are visiting Vienna or lower Austria (Niederösterreich) in the winter, don't miss the Zauberberg (Magic Mountain). Its the Semmering Ski Region, which is about 1,5 hours drive from Vienna. Rent a car for a day, and its totally worth it. Whereelse can you go skiing but more fun - sleding for a day while visiting one of the most beautiful capitals of the world? In the winter, my friends and family visit the region often. They also have night hours, so you can ski at night or take a sled down with the little ones with cool lightning decoration. You can rent ski or sledes right there, and there are some really cute restaurants right on the slope. I prefer the one which is almost all the way down - its made of all wood but I forgot the name. Anyone? For more info, pls visit www.zauberberg.at. Enjoy! Its so much fun...

Parking in Vienna can be tricky, even for us, Viennese. The signs are obviously in German, so its difficult to read, never mind understand for foreigners. In general, keep in mind that there is almost everywhere fee based public parking with a maximum duration of 120 minutes.
So in districts 1-9 (you can see in what district you are by checking the house numbers and street names which usually have the district in front of it, i.e. 7.Kaiserstrasse 96 would be 7th district), the following parking times apply except otherwise stated on the street signs: Monday to Friday: 9am - 8pm, max. 120 minutes For districts, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17 the following times apply: Monday to Friday: 9am - 7pm, max. 180 minutes. You can purchase parking tickets (Parkscheine) at any smoke shope (Trafik) but its easiest to register on www.handyparken.at for a mobile parking registration with credit card payment. Hence you can send text messages easy with your car tag number. If you are coming with a car, we strongly recommend parking it in one of the many Park and Ride garages who offer day prices of EUR 3. All of the park and ride garages are well connected with the Viennese public transport system, which is one of the best in the world and will get you pretty much anywhere in Vienna quickly and cheap. I feel at home there, and in a way its the Vienna that seems the most familiar and likeable to me. Maybe because it reminds me of my time at NYU in 1994 before the East Village became so trendy or of my time in Berlin where Turkish culture is such a well integrated part of Prenzlauer Berg and the city in general. I dont really know but I love what the area around the Yppenplatz has to offer. The long outside market , which is much cooler than the Naschmarkt, and less frequented by the tourists. Never mind its not overpriced and swamped with people who think that they are important and want to be seen around but actually by the people who like to get a good deal on fresh veggies, herbs and much more. Did you know that the Brunnenmarkt (thats how the market is called) is the longest outside street market in all of Europe? But I also like the farmers market which happens once a week on Saturday and all these little and really cool cafes and restaurants . The owners and operators, so it seems and feels must be people who want to do things differently, and with a back bone of integrity and authenticty. Usually I fav the two DO-AN places, one of which is a fish restaurtant with excellent fish and wines but a bit pricy. The DO-AN cafe serves excellent breakfast and coffee and I really enjoy going there too. This time, I tried the Rasouli place, and I was taken away by the excellence of choices especially for someone who does not eat meat. Its all cooked right in front of your eyes, and it tasted super good. I will return there many times, and hope that they stick aorund for a very long time. They fit perfectly in the the so called "Soho" of Vienna.
Here are some infos on them: They are open Tuesday and Friday 9.30 - midnight Saturdays from 9am to midnight Sundays from 9:30 to 6pm. Adress: Payergasse 12, 1160 Wien | Tel. 01 403 13 47 | [email protected], www.rasouli.at |
